Terror on the Turnpike was a haunted attraction produced by FrightWorks in October 1999 to benefit local non-profit organizations. A ~7500 sq. ft. unoccupied office unit was transformed over the course of six weeks into a phenomenally entertaining and frightening experience. A wide variety of special effects were designed specifically for Terror on the Turnpike, including professional music and sound effects, optical illusions, custom lighting, animatronics, and many special-made props. Exhibits included a torture chamber, mad Dr.'s lab, a crypt full of the living undead, a graveyard with zombies, and a dark hall full of disembodied spirits. Perhaps most memorable were the dark (pitch black) maze and the werewolf transformation, where a person transformed into a werewolf right in front of the audience, only to break free and attack. Over 3000 people braved the haunt, and the reviews were rave, with many comparing it favorably to quality commercial haunts like Ripley's Haunted Adventure in Gatlinburg. Despite the short amount of notice before the haunt opened, the local press were very helpful in getting the word out to the public. A tour bus arrived from WIVK with morning personalities Andy and Allison and about 20 listeners one evening. Their thrilling experiences were relayed to the public the next morning on WIVKs popular morning show. WBIR television's Live at Five ran two segments on their show specifically about Terror on the Turnpike. One was a live report on opening night while the other was an interview with the producers of Terror on the Turnpike conducted by Ted Hall. The haunt was open for a brief run of 7 days spread over two weekends building to a climax Halloween night. Terror on the Turnpike brought in over $7000 in profit to benefit local organizations. |
